The U.S. has the dubious distinction of capturing the top spot in the so-called “Couch Potato Olympics” for the most lazy country in the industrialized world, at least according to the DailyBeast. The U.S. was first among 24 developed nations in four evenly “weighted” categories: calorie intake, daily TV viewing, percentage of citizens who play (rather than just watch) sports, and Internet use.
According to the survey, the U.S. earned gold in calories and in TV viewership, and bronze in sports aversion and web surfing, thus qualifying for the overall gold medal in laziness. Canada took the silver medal in this survey and Belgium won the bronze, followed by Turkey and Great Britain and 19 other countries (Switzerland came in at number 24).
Okay, so it’s no secret that people spend way too much time glued to their couch watching reality TV, or playing videogames, or surfing the net. However, there is nonetheless an inherent contradiction in these findings (assuming the findings have validity); despite the ongoing economic recession, the U.S. is still one of–if not the–most productive, prosperous nations on the planet.
